What is the UPSC Syllabus for Civil Services Exam?

The UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) conducts the Civil Services Exam in India, which is considered one of the most prestigious and competitive examinations in the country. The syllabus for the UPSC Civil Services Exam is divided into three stages: the Preliminary Exam, the Main Exam, and the Interview.

  1. Preliminary Exam: Paper I: General Studies
  • Current events of national and international importance
  • History of India and the Indian National Movement
  • Indian and World Geography — Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the world
  • Indian Polity and Governance — Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  • Economic and Social Development — Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
  • Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change
  • General Science
  1. Paper II: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT)
  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Decision-making and problem-solving
  • General mental ability
  • Basic numeracy
  1. Main Exam: The Main Exam consists of nine papers, out of which two are qualifying in nature: Paper-A: Any Indian Language (Qualifying) Paper-B: English (Qualifying) The remaining seven papers are as follows: Paper-I: Essay Paper-II: General Studies I — Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society Paper-III: General Studies II — Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International relations Paper-IV: General Studies III — Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Security, and Disaster Management Paper-V: General Studies IV — Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude Paper-VI: Optional Subject Paper 1 Paper-VII: Optional Subject Paper 2
  2. Optional Subjects: Candidates can choose one optional subject from a list provided by the UPSC. Some popular optional subjects include History, Geography, Public Administration, Sociology, Political Science, etc.
  3. Interview (Personality Test): Candidates who qualify in the Main Exam are called for the Interview. It assesses the candidate’s overall personality, communication skills, and suitability for a career in the civil services.
